Eḷavaḷu means vegetables in Sinhala. In this series of photographs, I try to portray the island of Sri Lanka (where those pictures were made) using its products, vegetables in particular, as a departing point. An intriguing study, it shows how distinctive the produce of different places can be. Everything changes here: naming, varieties, what’s relevant and what’s not, how it alters the spectrum of flavors and dishes. These notions are deeply rooted in a group’s culture and imagery. ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; Julia Tatarchenko on Instagram via Art with Shop https://ift.tt/38sRJf8 from https://huerednerofficial.weebly.com/hue-redner/elavalu-by-photographer-julia-tatarchenko

Lately, Barbie manufacturer Mattel has been working hard to produce diverse dolls that represent women of all colors, shapes, sizes, and even careers. The brand’s latest line of Barbies coincided with Black History Month (February), and was designed in collaboration with Bermudan stylist and creative consultant Shiona Turini. The new collection is part of Barbie Style, a series that merges fashion, art, and culture. “I grew up obsessed with Barbie and while she was one of my first fashion icons, I clearly remember searching shelves for a doll that looked like me and coming up empty-handed,” says Turini. “The first black Barbie was introduced in 1980—in a sparkly red dress with an Afro pick in her hair.” Turini decided to pay homage to the original black Barbie by reintroducing her into the new lineup. She also added a bunch of new dolls into the collection, styled to celebrate the diversity of black culture. Turini’s Barbies feature a range of skin tones, as well as hairstyles, including braids, afros, finger waves, and “everything in between.” For their outfits, Turini designed a collection of doll-sized red outfits inspired by the original black Barbie. For another collection, she was influenced by the costumes she designed for Queen & Slim, a film she worked on last year. “When I worked on the movie Queen & Slim the stand-out, ‘hero’ look for me was mixing snakeskin and tiger prints in the same look,” says Turini. “The contrast of the two patterns completely subverts expectations, and I was excited to use the same formula on pieces such as Barbie’s thigh-high boots to break the traditional mold of dolls I had grown up playing with.” You can find out more about Turini’s Black History Month Barbie collection on Instagram. Its famed crosswalk in Shibuya regularly shuttles hundreds—if not thousands—from one side of the street to the other and has become an emblem of the city’s bustling nature. But there’s another side to Tokyo, one that few see. Luckily, thanks to Twitter user @urbex_34, this quiet side to Tokyo is now on display. This urban explorer sets out to expose a different and unexpected side to some of Tokyo’s beloved neighborhoods. His photographs of Akihabara—Tokyo’s capital of otaku culture—devoid of life are a striking look at an area that’s typically filled with a human presence. Akihabara, which earned the nickname “Electric Town” thanks to the electronics stores that popped up after World War II, is filled with manga and anime shops. Its sidewalks are typically teeming with cosplayers and maids beckoning guests into special maid cafes. For urbex_34, Akihabara is also something else. By exploring the neighborhood late at night, he’s able to come away with imagery that shows its secret side—a side without people. With only the glowing neon signs of shops and street lamps to light the way, Akihabara looks like another place altogether. In fact, many commenters point out that the atmosphere seems like a video game where people are ready to pop out and shoot at any moment. While it is surprising to see such a quiet neighborhood in Tokyo, other commenters pointed out that it’s not so unusual for Akihabara. While areas like Shibuya are filled night and day, as a commercial area, Akihabara tends to empty out once the shops and cafes close down around 9 pm. So the next time you want a little peace and quiet in Tokyo, you now know that Akihabara is the place to visit. Twitter user @urbex_34 shared otherworldly photos of Akihabara in Tokyo at night.

It’s a bright spot of news, as both humans and wildlife suffered devastating losses as a result of the flames. The situation was already eased in January thanks to heavy rains, but it wasn’t until February 13 that the fire service declared all of the fires extinguished. “For the first time since early July 2019, there is currently no active bush or grass fires in New South Wales,” the New South Wales Rural Fire Service tweeted. “That’s more than 240 days of fire activity for the state.” This triumphant statement comes after firefighters spent months battling fires, which affected every state in Australia. While fire season occurs in Australia every summer, this past year has been particularly devastating. Over 3,000 homes were destroyed and billions of animals either perished in the flames or saw their habitats destroyed. This caused veterinary hospitals to be overwhelmed with patients and the government to emergency drop thousands of pounds of food to animals left starving in the wild.
Even when relief came in the form of torrential rain, other issues like high winds and flooding caused further damage. Still, communities pulled together to raise funds and heroic citizens and pets helped rescue vulnerable animals. Now that the bushfires are officially over, the country can begin the rebuilding process. Homeowners are faced with tough decisions about how, and where, to rebuild with the government debating whether or not some high-risk communities should be zoned as off-limits to new construction. The government has also issued a new response plan in regards to the bushfires’ effects on threatened species and ecological communities. They plan on quickly reassessing the conservation needs of affected areas and species in order to prioritize aid, as well as working with the general public and indigenous communities on future fire prevention and collaborative efforts to bring back biodiversity. Though the rebuilding process will take some time, here’s hoping that Australia can take the lessons learned from these devastating bushfires and put them to good use in anticipation of future fire seasons. h/t: [CNN] Related Articles:Koalas Are “Functionally Extinct” Due to Devastating Australian Bushfires Courageous Border Collie Leads 900 Sheep to Safety During Australian Bushfires Australian Firefighter Figurine Helps Raise Funds for Animals Affected by Bushfires Australian Army Troops Use Time Off From Fighting Bushfires to Care for Displaced Koalas The post Bushfires in Australia’s New South Wales Are Officially Over After More Than 240 Days appeared first on My Modern Met. via Art with Shop https://ift.tt/38ni9Pt from https://huerednerofficial.weebly.com/hue-redner/bushfires-in-australias-new-south-wales-are-officially-over-after-more-than-240-days From funny calendars to custom beer cans, many organizations have come up with creative ways to encourage people to adopt dogs from animal shelters. One of the latest canine campaigns was run by Just Pizza & Wing Co. in Amherst, New York, who partnered with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Niagara. They decided to attach flyers onto each pizza box, showcasing the profiles of adoptable dogs. Mary Alloy (owner of the Just Pizza & Wing Co. pizza franchise) volunteers with SPCA, and wanted to find a unique way to help the shelter dogs find forever homes. While brainstorming with SPCA’s event coordinator, Kimberly LaRussa, they came up with the idea of attaching flyers to each order. “Kimberly texted me one night and was like, ‘Hey, what would you think about putting pictures of the dogs on pizza boxes?’ and I just couldn’t wait,” Alloy reveals. “We are all animal lovers here, so I got permission from the franchise to do it and immediately got to work.” From Friday (February 28) until Sunday (March 1), customers were treated to an extra slice of cuteness with each order. The public’s reaction was extremely positive, and after the first day of putting the flyers on pizza boxes, a 6-month-old puppy named Larry was adopted! Those who adopted a dog were also given a $50 gift certificate to Just Pizza in Amherst. Not only has the campaign helped SPCA dogs find new homes, but the family-run pizzeria has also benefited from the flock of new, animal-loving customers. Although the dog flyer campaign has ended, LaRussa and Alloy don’t plan to stop there—Just Pizza & Wing Co. customers can soon expect to see their orders come with flyers of adoptable cats! Our culture is fixated on what’s new and vibrant with people in their teens or twenties falling into these categories. But as photographer Arianne Clément shows, we should pay attention to those who have been alive for more than half a century—not only can we learn a lot, but seeing this group thriving can change your attitude towards yourself as you age. Clément’s senior citizen portraits showcase the beauty routines as well as the desire that older couples have for one another. Her images are intended to question the standards that we, as a society, place on aging. These arbitrary conditions, that seem to imply that with age comes less desirability, are shattered through her portraits. Clément demonstrates that no matter how old we are, we still want to look good for ourselves (and others), and express love while being loved. The striking images offer a candid view into the private lives of her subjects and a powerful reminder that age truly is just a number. We spoke to Clément about her work as well as another photography series—also dealing with age—that’s on the horizon. Scroll down to read My Modern Met’s exclusive interview. An encounter with a 102-year-old woman named Marie-Berthe was revelatory for you. Can you describe what happened and why you found it so enlightening? When I photographed Marie-Berthe, I was amazed by her ease in front of the camera. She acted like she was a young glamorous actress who feels sexy and attractive even though she was 102. It’s rare to photograph someone as comfortable as she; and, considering her age, it was very inspiring. She showed me (and a lot of people by now) that beauty is a state of mind, an attitude, something that has nothing to do with age, but everything to do with confidence. How did you find people to photograph for this project? I found most of my models through social media. They were willing to participate in the project because they knew my work and understood what the project was about; they wanted to redefine the conventions around beauty and inspire other women. What kind of trust did you have to build with them to allow them to be so vulnerable in front of your lens? The vulnerability you are referring to came very naturally, possibly because of the nature of the project. I think I am a respectful woman and photographer and I like to create a safe space for my models. I never push them, I respect their boundaries and I don’t publish anything they’re not comfortable with. Your portraits, in a sense, are a criticism of the narrow beauty standards that exist in our society today. Based on what you’ve learned from your subjects, how do you think our lives would be improved if we let go of these standards? If only we could accept ourselves, our bodies, the way they are, we would save so much time and money! I don’t think anybody (but the beauty industry) takes advantage of the shame and stress surrounding appearance. It’s heartbreaking to think that many of us go through life worrying constantly about the way they look instead of focusing on fulfilling things. Life is too short. Everyone would benefit from more freedom, independence, self-love. Why do you portray your models in black and white? I have always been a black and white photographer. I started with analog photography in university, which I pretty much spent in the darkroom. It’s the way I learned photography; I look at lights, the shadows, and the contrast and barely notice the colors. I admire color photographers but I found my images to be more powerful when in black and white. What do you hope people take away from your photographs? I certainly hope that my photographs make people feel better about aging. I also hope that they raise awareness about certain challenges related to aging. What are you working on now? Anything exciting you can tell us about? I’m working on a project on the Blue Zones. The Blue Zones are a concept that appeared in 2005 following a publication in the National Geographic Magazine, regarding regions in the world where there are the highest concentrations of very old people. The inhabitants of these regions share lifestyle characteristics that contribute to their exceptionally long life expectancy. Demographers Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain focused first on seniors in the Sardinia region, an island of Italy, then observed similar longevity in the elders living off the islands of Okinawa, Japan, and Ikaria, Greece, as well as on the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, and in the city Southern California from Loma Linda, United States. I went to the five zones and finished my travels in late December of 2019. I am now editing the photos and putting the story together and hoping to find publishers as well as places to exhibit the story.
